My Connections to Play

"If I get to pick what I want to do, then it's play...if someone else tells me that I have to do it, then it's work."
-Patricia Nourot

"The essence of childhood, of course, is play, which my friends and I did endlessly on street that we reluctantly shared with traffic."
-Bill Cosby

While I was growing up, I had some health problems and as a result, I do not have very many memories of my childhood.  However, I do remember that my friends and I lived close together and we would walk to each others houses to play.  Back then, we could play in the neighborhood without supervision and our parents encouraged us to play.  Unfortunately, children cannot play these days without supervision and due to overcrowding, there are not many places for children to play. Additionally, children do not have to entertain themselves like we did, because of the numerous forms of media that are available to them.

  1. your picture remind me of my sister. She played with the same dolls. I think the Speak and Spell was one of the best toys ever.

  2. Melissa,
I see you picked the Speak and Spell game as well like I did:) I think that game was great back in the day, and could keep you busy for hours. I also love your cabbage patch kid doll my sister had one just like that one but with different clothes on. And I had one too. I thought it was amazing that those cabbage patch dolls came with a birth certificate that stated what country she was from. (ex.Spain, Switzerland, France, Norway) That is so true Melissa how play has change from how it use to be. Children had more freedom to play a game of kickball or baseball at their local park, but now things have changed to where children are in the house and doing more indoor activities.
